Health and safety at work - regulation and inspection

The Authority has a duty to enforce the relevant safety regulations to prevent accidents and ill health amongst the many workers and customers of the Borough. The various premises include retail outlets, offices, sports premises, warehouses, religious premises, garages, and other service industries such as hotels, pubs, clubs, hairdressers and most leisure activities.

Each premises is routinely inspected to ensure that adequate safety provisions and management procedures are in place to minimize the risk of foreseeable incidents causing injury. Also, the long-term impacts on the health of workers due to noise, exposure to substances and repetitive strain injuries will be assessed. 

Enforcement activity is undertaken to minimise the likelihood of accidents or injuries occurring or to ensure the provision of adequate facilities for workers such as toilets, protective clothing, training and information, first aid etc.
