Tattooists, Piercing and Electrolysis Registration

To carry out tattooing, cosmetic piercing, micropigmentation and electrolysis, both the premises and the person carrying out the activity need to be registered with the Council.

This is a service where there is an associated fee or charge.

For information on our current fees and charges see our Environmental Health Fees and Charges page.

A registration form can be printed by clicking on the link on the right of this page. The fee for registration is outlined at the bottom of the registration form. Registration is not required if carried out under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner.

The purpose of registration is to prevent infection of the person whose skin is pierced by the activity. Registered skin piercing personnel and premises must comply with byelaws designed to prevent infection.

A list of tattooists and their premises registered in Merthyr Tydfil can be found by clicking on the appropriate link on the right of this page. Advice for anyone thinking about having a tattoo is also provided.

Advice and safe practice guidance for operators delivering tattooing, body piercing and micropigmentation is now available to download.* The guidance found by clicking on the right of this page includes information on basic requirements for safe, clean premises, legal issues, waste disposal, infection control, aftercare advice and at a glance checklist. Appendices within each document also present examples of how a medical history questionnaire, consent form and aftercare advice sheet might be prepared for each of the three treatment areas.

These guidance documents were developed by Calderdale Council and they are provided here with their kind permission.
